Work Experience (WEX)

Persons interested in obtaining college level credit for on-the-job learning can enroll in the Work Experience Education Program also known as WEX.

An employer must commit to taking you on as an intern/empoyee before you can enroll in WEX. Contact the Career Center to schedule a time to meet with a Career Specialist to learn more about the enrollment process and if needed, help with finding a WEX Instructor and/or employer.

Work-Study programs pay some or all of a students wages, while WEX allows students to earn academic credit for on-the-job learning.
Yes, your wages may be subsidized by the Work-Study program (if you qualify) while you also earn units for on-the-job learning.
Your instructor will usually be an instructor in the discipline (department) in which you are studying. Their role will be to guide you in the production of valid learning objectives and to meet with your supervisor at the end of the semester for an evaluation at which time they will issue you a grade. We will provide a list of WEX instructors when you come in to pick up your Work Experience packet.
This is an open-entry, open-exit course which means you can add or drop this course any time. These courses are offered during the Fall, Spring, and Summer terms.
Students enrolled in either paid or unpaid WEX programs can count hours worked upon receipt of their completed work experience packet (no sooner than the first day of the semester).
Typically the last day to count hours for WEX is the day before the 1st day of the following semester (for example if the fall semester begins August 21, the last day to count hours for the summer semester is August 20).
You will not receive credit for the work you have completed. This would be the same as doing the coursework associated with a particular class but not adding the class until the end of the semester. It's too late!
If you fail to turn in your timesheet by the due date that was given to you when you enrolled in Work Experience you will be given an "I/F" for incomplete. You will then have 6 months to take the appropriate action in order to correct your grade. At the end of the 6 months if you have not turned in your timesheet the "I/F" will become an "F" which will then be irreversible.
Yes, the type of job you have as well as whether or not you will be paid will determine which program you need to enroll in. If you would like some assistance in obtaining a position contact a Career Specialist.
Yes, Financial Aid will pay for WEX as long as you are registered for WEX prior to the Financial Aid census date (the third week of the semester).
